The law requires employers to pay employees for all time worked, which includes any activity that is part of the job or is necessary to perform part of the job. This means that employers may have to pay employees for tasks performed before they clock in and after they clock out.

Retail establishments and warehouses are notorious for subjecting workers to security inspections and bag checks after these workers clock out for the day.  Time spent waiting in line and going through the security screening may be considered time worked.
